Does God punish children for their parents' sins? on Mon 19 Oct 2009, 8:49 pm
Exodus 20:5-6
I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Deuteronomy 24:16
Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.
Ezekiel 18:20
The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.
Many people have put this question in ignorance that these verses contradict themselves. If the Bible is Word of God then God cannot be writer of confusion.
In Exodus 20:5-6, God Almighty warns us that if people turn to other gods, bow down to them and serve them, He would punish their children to fourth generation. However, in the end of the command, God shows His mercy by saying "showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."
In Deuteronomy 24:16, God talks of social evils and sins. He says no one is to punish a child of a thief, or mistreat others if they have to pay debt to anyone.
In Ezekiel 18:20 again God talks of social evil and commands that the children are not to be punished for the crimes of their fathers.
