The Marvel Of The Human Eye

Three thousand years ago, the wisest man in the world, King Solomon, wrote, “The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them” (Proverbs 20:12). The human eye is a marvel of God’s creation. It astonishes the mind of anyone who begins to contemplate the scientific research that has been conducted on its amazing construction and activity. The degree of complexity displayed in the wondrous construction of the various parts of the eye make the theory that it ‘astonishes the mind of anyone who begins to consider the amazing creation of the human eye that God has made. The degree of complexity displayed in the wondrous construction of the various parts of the eye prove that there is a designer behind such a marvels creation as the human eye. The secular belief that humans evolved over millions of years by tiny random-chance mutations” is an absolute impossibility, and is absurd. The naturalist creator of the theory of evolution, Charles Darwin, actually Admitted that the engineering of the human eye was so specialized and complex that he could not begin to image how it might have developed through the evolutionary processes of random mutation and natural selection. To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree. Another evolutionary scientist, Dr. Ernst Mayer, admitted the difficulty in imagining how the complex human eye could possibly form through chance mutations. It is a considerable strain on one’s credulity to assume that finely balanced systems such as certain sense organs (the eye of vertebrates of the feathers of birds) could be improved by random mutations. One of the great problems facing those who deny a Creator is to explain how natural selection or random mutation could evolve such a phenomenally complex organ as the human eye when none of the hundreds of thousands of imagined intermediate mutations could have any value until the entire system was in place to allow vision to take place. The only rational conclusion is that God created the fully developed human eye when He created Adam and Eve. The eye is engineered far more precisely than a modern, sophisticated camera. However, recent research into its functions reveals that the human eye is vastly more complex and sophisticated that any camera ever made by man. In a manner similar to advanced cameras in the last decade, the human eye displays advanced autofocus features with a remarkable ability to adjust the diaphragm of the iris automatically and at a phenomenal speed. The lens of your eye modifies its shape through tiny muscles that allow the eye to correctly focus on an object that is moving toward you or away from you. This act is not unlike the workings of a sophisticated, computer-controlled modern camera when it calculates distances and automatically adjusts to bring the object into focus. The lens of your eye is constructed of microscopic and transparent living cells. These cells allow light photons to enter through the cornea, pass through the fluid, and be analyzed by the phenomenal organ known as the retina. To understand the complexity and sophistication of the engineering of the eye, we need to appreciate the retina. The retina lines the back of your eye and acts as a form of film which receives the actual image composed of light photons passing through the iris, cornea, and eye fluid. Your retina is thinner than paper yet its tiny surface (one inch square) contains 137 million light-sensitive cells. Approximately 95 percent of these cells are rods that can analyze black and white images, while the balance of approximately seven million cone cells are used to analyze color images. Each of these millions of cells are separately connected to the optic nerve that transmits the signal to your brain at approximately three hundred miles per hour. The millions of specialized cells in your eye can analyze more that one million messages a second. The retina in your eye is the most light-sensitive object in the universe. It is so much more sophisticated in its design than even the most powerful electron microscope or spy camera. For example, the most advanced film available today can differentiate between a range of one thousand to one. However, recent experiments have confirmed that the retina of the human eye can easily differentiate and analyze a range of ten billion to one. Experiments have revealed that the retina can actually detect one single photon of light in a dark room, something beyond the range of engineering instruments. Recently, scientists have determined that the specialized cells in the retina actually partially analyze the image in the eye before it is ever transmitted through the optic nerve to the brain. These retina cells perform up to ten billion calculations per second in determining the nature of the image transmitted to the eye by light photons. No computers on earth are capable of matching these virtually instantaneous calculations. In an article in Byte computer magazine in April 1985, Dr. John Stevens made the following comparison: To simulate 10 milliseconds of the complete processing of even a single nerve cell from the complete processing of solution of about 500 simultaneous non-linear differential equation one hundred times and would take at least several minutes of processing time on a Cary super computer. Keeping in mind that there are 10 million or more such cells interacting with each other in complex ways it would take a minimum of a hundred years of Cray tome to simulate what takes place in your eye many times every second. In the article, Dr. Stevens wrote that if we were to attempt to duplicate the computing power of the human eye, we would have to build the world’s most advanced computer with a single silicon chip (normally the size of a dime) that would comer 10,000 cubic inches and contain billions of transistors and hundreds of miles of circuit traces Is so small that it fills only 0.0003 inches of space. If we could ever build this kind of computer chip it would weigh at least 100 pounds, in comparison to the human retina that weights less that a gram. The retina operates with less than 0.0001 watts of electrical charge. To duplicate the retina’s abilities, the computer would need to consume 300 watts of power. In other words, the retina is 3,000,000 times more efficient in it power consumption. When we consider the marvelous design of the smallest parts of your body, we are filled with wonder at the glory of God’s creation. Anyone who suggests that these phenomenally complex and sophisticated organs have evolved with out a designer, by random-chance mutations, is a fool or a liar. The Bible has only one answer to those who would deny the Creator: “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God’ (Psalms 14:1) The Psalmist David acknowledge the truth that we are created by God. ‘Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves, we his people, and the sheep of his pasture’ (Psalms 1003). The Function Of The Eye The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, they whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, they whole body shall be full of darkness. If thee for the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:22-23) As mentioned above, the human eye functions like a modern camera. The light enters the eye through the iris – the “lamp of the body.” The ‘LIGHT’ we allow into our eye affects our soul and our spirit. The prophet Zechariah warned those who hosts, after the glory hath He sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: For he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye’ (Zechariah 2) In other words, when men hurt the Jewish people, it is as if they have inflicted the same pain to God as we feel when our eye is injured. A fascinating insight into the physiology of the human eye is demonstrated in the book of Judges. The passage describes the Israeli army’s attack on their enemies. Led by their brilliant general, Gideon, the Jewish army waited to attack until the change of the guard, when ‘they had but newly set the watch,: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands” (Judges 7:19). In other word, Gideon, as a wise general, delayed his attack until the moment the enemy soldiers, who had just awakened from sleep, were placed on guard duty. This meant that the pupils of their eyes would not yet have fully adapted to the darkness and would have had difficulty in seeing their enemy approaching in the dark.

Thank you Lee it is really an interesting article to read. Bible has rightly said that eyes are "Lamp of the body". I happened to meet a person who was not blessed with eyes. Believe me his thoughts were dark, full of bitterness and his life too. He just gave in to his disability. However, my reply is not relevant to your post but this came in to my thoughts. We sometimes act like people who do not have eyes. Our bitterness kills us and we always live a negative life. Talking against people being unthankful to God's great and awesome blessings. We are always running after things we do not have or we envy.

One day I thought, that I would pen down all the blessings that God gave me all my life. Believe me, I could not count and when I compared to the things I did not have - I was amazed, I had million times more things I had ever imagined of. Then I thought of writing down the good times and hard times I have faced. Again I was amazed, I enjoyed good times million times more than the hard times.

What amazed me is that we enjoy more good times than hard times, we have far more blessings than what we think we do not have, yet our eyes do not see them. We never thank God for all His compassion. mercy, kindness and love He always shows towards us.
