Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit". (Mathew 28:19)

Both are correct, according to ACTS 8:16, baptism in Jesus Christ means that accepting Jesus Christ. Baptism done ceremonially involves Mathew 28:19

Baptism: Which is the correct way? Empty Re: Baptism: Which is the correct way

This subject has caused controversy throughout the church age. Should one be baptized as an infant or as an adult? Should one be immersed under water or sprinkled with water or have water poured over the head? Should one say "I baptize you in the name of Jesus" or "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit"?

Part of the problem with these questions is they are "surface" questions. That is they affect only the outward manifestation of baptism. If baptism is to have any real significance it must "touch" the spirit and soul as well as the body.

Baptism can be related to the rite of circumcision as required by God for the Israelites in that it is an outward sign of the covenant established by God between Himself and His chosen people. "My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. And A you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you" (Genesis 17:10-11 NASU). For a male not to be circumcised would result in that male being excommunicated from God and His chosen people (Genesis 17:14). Yet, this "mark in the flesh" was of no value if the heart and soul had not also been "circumcised". Jeremiah told the Israelites, who had the mark of circumcision, they were no better than the pagan nations around them. "'Behold, the days are coming,' declares the Lord, 'that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet A uncircumcised — Egypt and Judah, and Edom and the sons of Ammon, and Moab and all those inhabiting the desert who clip the hair on their temples; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised of heart'" (Jeremiah 9:25-26 NASU). Paul emphasizes the meaning of this when confronting Jews who took pride in the fact they were circumcised according to the letter of the law, but uncircumcised according to the Spirit. "For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the pirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God" (Romans 2:28-29 NASU). Unless the mark of circumcision "touched" the spirit and soul, it was worse than useless because it caused a false sense of security in the one circumsized. He falsely believed he was living in convenant relationship with God, but was not. That's dangerous.

So it is with baptism. Baptism, in and of itself, saves no one, whether one is immersed in water or has water sprinkled or poured over one's head. This is why Jesus commanded his followers to: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19 NASU). Notice first it is disciples who are to be baptized. This is one reason I beleive infant baptism is of no value - they cannot be disciples because they are physically and intellectually unable to fulfill the calling of a disciple. More importantly though is the baptismal formula: "in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit". To be baptized in the name of the Trinity is to be baptized into the character and nature (for that is what names signify) of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Baptism is to "touch" our bodies as symbolizing the death, burial, and resurrection of the old sinful nature into a new creation in Christ. It is to "touch" our souls (our will, intellect, and emotions - who we are as individuals) as we submit to the authority of the Lord saying, "Not my will, but Yours be done". Baptism of the soul is manifested by submission to God's will. Baptism is to "touch" our spirits (our conscious, intuition, communion) as our born-again spirits are instructed by the Holy Spirit as to the Father's will.

What's important to remember is that baptism is more than being dunked (or sprinkled) with water. Unless I have made a conscious decision to give up my life (Greek - soul) as commanded by Jesus (Matthew 10:39 and others) and unless I have made a concious decision to seek the Lord through the power of my spirit engaging the Holy Spirit, all baptism does is get you wet. And that's dangerous because, like the physical mark of circumcision, it can create a false sense of security.

Terry, thank you. I believe Jesus last words on earth should
be taking serious, Matthew 28:19-20. Go
ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things
whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the
end of the world. The baptism of water is different than the baptism of the Holy
Spirit. I was baptized in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit. The Holy
Spirit came to me after I was baptized it came when I truly believed without a
doubt that I was saved just as I was, a sinner. And that really touch my heart.
So from then on I am forever in debt to Him who saved me. Amen
