Atrocities by God? Empty Atrocities by God?

Post  Waqar Daniel Sun 14 Sep 2008, 12:33 pm

Some unknown person with a fake email sent me a website address and asked me,

"He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." --1 John 4:8 (KJV) I have been reading articles on your forum for three days now and I have a question to ask. If we read the verse in 1 john 4:8, then why did God order innocent people to be killed? Please explain and do visit http://aethlos.com/biblenotes to see the truth. The God in the Old Testament seems to have many personalities; cruel, unjust, kind, loving, etc."

As the email address was not reachable so I opted to answer the question on the forum and I hope it is also read. It is not amazing to me as I find this question on all the atheists' websites and many fall prey to their ignorance. The only problem I have been able to understand is that we do not read Bible, and we believe in what we are told and then we make judgments. There is an other problem, we want God to work on our will, if we sin and live in sin, then we say, "God is love and He will forgive everyone in the end". So convenient - isn't it?

Was God really cruel to INNOCENT people?
How could a loving God command the destruction of all those "innocent" people? Although the argument sounds good and logical, but it is utterly false.

"It is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. (Deuteronomy 9:5)

God never destroyed innocent people, rather as in the verse all of them were wicked and God did not replace them with Jews because they were righteous or upright as it says in the Bible.

We can see the wickedness of these nations in the Bible and it is also recorded in the history. Their wickedness exceeded so much that in their wickedness they killed their own sons and daughters by burning them in sacrifices to their gods:

"You shall not behave thus toward the LORD your God, for every abominable act which the LORD hates they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods. (Deuteronomy 12:31)

Their wickedness is also confirmed in other parts of the Bible, Therefore, we see that these people are not quite as innocent as the atheists would like us to believe. Maybe these atheists believe that killing children is not all bad.

And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. (2 Kings 17:31)

Not only this God also warned the Jews not to take their way of living and called this behavior as snare:

"When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?' (Deuteronomy 12:29-30)

What is God's attitude towards innocent?

Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before the LORD. Abraham came near and said, "Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? "Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?" So the LORD said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account." And Abraham replied, "Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am but dust and ashes. Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy the whole city because of five?" And He said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there." He spoke to Him yet again and said, "Suppose forty are found there?" And He said, "I will not do it on account of the forty." Then he said, "Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak; suppose thirty are found there?" And He said, "I will not do it if I find thirty there." And he said, "Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord; suppose twenty are found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy it on account of the twenty." Then he said, "Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy it on account of the ten." As soon as He had finished speaking to Abraham the LORD departed, and Abraham returned to his place. (Genesis 18:22-33)

We read that God would not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah if He would any innocent, therefore God never destroyed any innocent person with an evil one.

Moreover, we bring judgment of God on ourselves and then we blame God for that. I don't find it logical at all. If a murderer is prosecuted in the courts and the courts awards life imprisonment to the murderer, can we say the courts are cruel? The court did not ask the person to murder, the person knew the punishment for murdering even then that murderer broke the law and willfully brought the judgment on himself or herself. So who is cruel here???

Nice answer Daniel and it is true that our wickedness brings God's wrath on us. God keeps His love over us but we refuse God all the time. God is righteous and therefore, He can judge us and He is always just.

As you have pointed out people don't read Bible but they will believe in all foolish things. When God disciplines them they turn against God because they do not want to listen to truth. They want to cover their sins either by quoting Bible or rejecting God.

My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent His rebuke (Proverbs 3:11)

God bless all

I liked the response and I am amazed at these people how they reject God just to justify themselves as gods themselves. May God Almighty have mercy on their souls. I hope God may open their eyes so that they may see the Son.

Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. (Psalm 2:12)
