Gov't employees petition Hillary for same-sex benefits
A pro-homosexual group within the U.S. government is hoping its letter to Hillary Clinton last week will ignite a push for marriage-like benefits for same-sex partners of federal employees.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was asked in a letter last week from nearly 2,200 government employees involved in foreign policy issues to provide benefits to same-gender partners. During confirmation hearings, Clinton suggested she might want to explore the matter as secretary of state.
"I think we should take a hard look at the existing policy," she told the Senate panel. "My understanding is other nations have moved to extend that partnership benefit."
Matt Barber of Liberty Counsel is not surprised by the request -- and the response. "They may very well get their wish with this current administration in that Barak Obama has also signed off on every demand of the homosexual lobby," he says.
Liberty Counsel's director of cultural affairs says the administration's stand on homosexuality really represents the federal government underwriting dangerous lifestyles -- not to mention, a lifestyle that cultures have frowned upon for centuries. "It's inappropriate for our government to sanction what every major world religion and thousands of years of history have considered sexually immoral behaviors," Barber argues.
According to Barber, getting same-gender benefits is only one phase of the homosexual agenda. "This is one step in order to try to get full homosexual 'marriage' recognition at the federal level," he says. "This is the camel's nose in the tent."
The letter to Clinton came from the group Gay and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies (GLIFAA). It still appeared on the group's website this week and allows employees of all federal agencies to sign.
According to the Washington Post, 92 percent of those who signed the letter to Clinton were either single or married to someone of the opposite sex. There is no indication in the Post's report how many of the signatories may be homosexual or have a live-in partner of the same sex, although the online version of the letter allows for those distinctions.
