Offering Praise to Heavenly Father Empty Offering Praise to Heavenly Father

Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. (Mark 6:41)

Our bodies require energy in order to function properly. This energy is provided by God in the form of food. Most of us never praise God for this blessing or just ignore prayer because food is getting cold.

In Mark 6:41, Jesus shows us an amazing thing. He picks up the food presents it before Heavenly Father, gives thanks and then He gives it to disciples to be placed before people. Jesus did two things here;

  • Presented the food to God
  • Gave thanks for the blessing

The word which is translated as "thanks" in NIV and "blessed" in KJV comes from the Greek word eulogeo. From this word comes the English word Eulogy. It means, "speak well of, praise, extol".

Jews prayed twice, once before the meal and second after the meal. Prayer after the meal was in accordance to;

When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. (Deuteronomy 8:10)

Every faithful Jew prayed before partaking of bread:

"Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the world, who has caused bread to come forth out of the earth."

Or they would pray the following prayer before eating

Blessed are You, HaShem, our God, King of the Universe, by whose word everything comes to be.

Therefore, before and after meals we must thank God, because He chose us to have food and enjoy food. There are millions who go without food, yet when we have food, we don't thank God for His blessing that in His love and mercy bestowed upon us.

I agree with your post Daniel and we all forget to thank God who in love gave the best for us. We eat and drink and live merry lives without thanking God. I see thanking God as honoring Him for who He is and He is the "Provider" of the universe and whatever there is in it. I liked this small reminder and I remember when we used to have our meals, my grandma used to make us say grace before and after the meals. Some how it stuck with and few words before and after meals has blessed my family and I pray that others may also benefit from this.
