John 8:57-59

King James Version (KJV)

57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

John 8:57-59

Revised Standard Version (RSV)

57 The Jews then said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

57 Jesus was a man in His 30’s but as God He was eternal. Jesus may have been visited Abraham a year before he had his son Isaac. Jesus is God in the flesh.

58 Jesus here announces He is equal with God. At the burning bush in Ex 3, Moses ask God His name and God told him to tell them I Am has sent you because of this Jesus referring to Himself as I Am was consider blasphemy by these men who lacked the truth and faith.

59 The go to stone Him for blasphemy because it was not His time yet, He was able to slip away from the temple. They were not to be any stoning on the temple ground but they became so angry they may have not noticed where they were. Stoning was often done in the outskirts of the city; they would take them there to stone them.

The answer to this mystery is in the question raised to Jesus and in Jesus' response to the Jews.

In John 8:53, in a dialogue between Jesus and the Jews, he is asked the question: "Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do you make yourself out to be?"

His surprising and revealing response to this question is in verses 56-58: "' . . . Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.' Then the Jews said to Him, 'You are not yet fifty years old . . .' Jesus said to them, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.' "

Jesus uses past tense here that Abraham saw it and was glad.

My belief
Abraham saw Jesus because Adam (mankind) was banished from the presence of Heavenly Father and Jesus bridged that gap through crucifixion. We stand neither condemned nor banished before the sight of Heavenly Father any more.

Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. (2 Peter 1:4)
We became partakers in divine nature after crucifixion and resurrection of Christ and before this we were not.

God bless you

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the LORD Jesus Christ. (Philemon 1:3)
