John 9:13-16

King James Version (KJV)

13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

John 9:13-16

Revised Standard Version (RSV)

The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 The Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” There was a division among them.

13 This shows how much pull the Pharisees truly people had even feared them because of this. The Pharisees wanted to know so they could try to get an accusation to get rid of Jesus and make an example of Him.

14 Jesus healed man on the Sabbath and the Pharisees did nothing on the Sabbath even doing any good. Jesus healed on the Sabbath because doing well should not be limited just to six days people also need help and the Sabbath as well. The only the Pharisees had against Jesus is that He did not follow after their tradition but He did follow after the law given by Moses. Jesus did not work on the Sabbath and did keep it holy by saving people and people’s souls.

15 To do this was not against any laws. The Pharisees make an excuse to chase after Jesus and to try to turn the people against Him. Jesus had said before He is God’s Son and the Pharisees did not like this either even though it is true.

16 This was not truly breaking the Sabbath but did break the burdens they put on the day to make their selves feel superior to those who did not follow their traditions. Their traditions were not law but they treated them as such because they at times put more value on their traditions than the law. Some knew that such miracles could only happen with God’s power and knew that He was a man of God.
