The Don’ts of aerobic Systems
Aerobic systems are widely in use these days. These systems are used in soil conditions which is unsuitable for the use of the conventional septic tank method. This system provides cleaner outlet which can be easily disposed into the environment. The aerobic method lasts longer if properly maintained.
Proper care should be taken of the system to achieve best results. None should be allowed to drive over or park on any part of the system. Without obtaining the required health department permits one should not make or allow unauthorized repairs or changes to the aerobic system. One should not use the toilet as a trash can or poison the treatment system and the ground water by introducing harmful chemicals down the drain. The beneficial bacteria that treat the waste water can be killed by harsh chemicals. Any sealed aerobic unit components should not be cleaned or one should not try to maintain such parts as it can cause harm to the system. A garbage disposal system should not be used unless one makes sure that the aerobic system can accommodate this additional waste.
One should not flush coffee grounds, dental floss, disposable diapers, kitty litter, cigarette butts, gauze bandages, fat, grease or oils and paper towels. Also chemicals such as paints, varnishes, thinners, waste oils, photographic solutions and pesticides should never be flushed into the toilet. These substances can overtax or destroy the biological digestion that takes place within the system.
Though not very commonly used in Kerala flats these systems are used in villas and many other foreign countries.
