“The score was level in the local derby- and full time was near. “Penalty! Penalty! roared the crowd as a defender handled the ball in the ‘area’.
But the referee had spotted it. Blowing the whistle, he pointed to the spot. The player lined himself up for the kick of the match. The ball flew into the back of the net. A roar rose up from the crowd as the whistle blew for time. it was the deciding goal.
No one complained about the penalty. The infringement was clear, the referee could do no other than allow it.”

Taking a look at infringement again I see another potent spiritual parallel and this is the question of the vicarious nature of sin. One player committed the infringement and the whole team suffered the penalty. That is just like life. a man sins and his family suffers. One man sins and a multitude suffer. Adam sinned and we were all tainted, condemned, destroyed. Achan sinned and all his family were tainted and destroyed.:
You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, Ex.20:5
maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation." Ex34:7
'The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.' Num.14:18

Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. Rom.5:16
Achan sinned and His whole family suffered even as his sin affected the whole of Israel, halting the revival and victory that God was giving them, beginning with Jericho.
[ Achan's Sin ] But the Israelites acted unfaithfully in regard to the devoted things ; Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the LORD's anger burned against Israel. Josh7:1
Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. Jos7:18
Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold wedge, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then the LORD turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since. . V24, 26
Buoyed by the victory that God had wrought through them, the Joshua sent spies to Ai to see how much reinforcement he needed. The report came that the people AI were very few and it would not make sense sending lots of soldiers and equipment that would have been better reserved for a large formidable opposition.
Unfortunately because Achan took the accursed thing- the silver and gold belonging to God they were beaten woefully. Joshua bowed face-down from morning evening fasting and praying and the Lord asked him what he was doing on the floor and that ‘Israel had sinned.’ The sin of one man meant that the whole congregation was tainted and vulnerable.
1 But the Israelites acted unfaithfully in regard to the devoted things [a] ; Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, [ the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the LORD's anger burned against Israel.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, "Go up and spy out the region." So the men went up and spied out Ai.
3 When they returned to Joshua, they said, "Not all the people will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary all the people, for only a few men are there." 4 So about three thousand men went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai, 5 who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries [c] and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the LORD, remaining there till evening. The elders of Israel did the same, and sprinkled dust on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, "Ah, Sovereign LORD, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? 9 The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?"
10 The LORD said to Joshua, "Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.
This was why Paul also wrote : Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 1Cor5:6 just as sin defiles the whole body, working through it like a yeast works through a dough, so does the sin of one man defile the whole body of Christ and can hinder revival or open the door for the enemy to strike havoc.
Haman sinned but all sin son suffered and were hanged on the gallows he built.( Esther9:4,13,14 ) King Saul sinned and the whole of Israel was implicated and they lost to their enemies. (1Sam.15) David sinned by carrying out a census and innocent people suffered as they died as a direct result of his sin.
1 Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and to the leaders of the people, “Go, number Israel from Beersheba to Dan, and bring the number of them to me that I may know it.”
9 Then the LORD spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying, 10 “Go and tell David, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD: “I offer you three things; choose one of them for yourself, that I may do it to you.”’”
11 So Gad came to David and said to him, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Choose for yourself, 12 either three[a] years of famine, or three months to be defeated by your foes with the sword of your enemies overtaking you, or else for three days the sword of the LORD—the plague in the land, with the angel[b] of the LORD destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.’ Now consider what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.”
13 And David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Please let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are very great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”
14 So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell. 15 And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he[c] was destroying, the LORD looked and relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who was destroying, “It is enough; now restrain your[d] hand.”
The idle hand or mind is the devil’s workshop.
David should have been at the war front but he stayed at home to watch porn. And he was hooked. Next we see him inviting Bathsheba, another man’s wife into his bedroom. Later he plots to cover up his tracts and then commits murder. The affair is made public and God sent his prophet, Nathan to confront King David.
It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem 2 Sam111
Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. 3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house.
And he wrote in the letter, saying, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck down and die.”
So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 2 Sam11:3
He committed Adultery and murdered an innocent man but the innocent child died in spite of his fasting and praying.
The Death of David’s Son
And the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it became ill. 16 David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. 17 So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them. 18 Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, “Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!”
19 When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?”
And they said, “He is dead.”
The infringement of David affected his innocent child. This is why we need to be careful about the way we live, because it will affect our children long after we have gone. So leave a legacy that will spell goodness and mercy for your children and children’s children.
On the positive side favour came to a man who was lame , hopeless, written off because covenant spoke for him. And that was Mephibosheth. Because of the covenant David had with his father, Jonathan, Mephibosheth ate with the kin’s sons on the king’s table. The kindness of his father, Jonathan towards David, culminating in a covenant brought him out of Lo-de-bar- barren place- to a place of abundance.
Now David said, “Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
You therefore, and your sons and your servants, shall work the land for him, and you shall bring in the harvest, that your master’s son may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth your master’s son shall eat bread at my table always.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem, for he ate continually at the king’s table. And he was lame in both his feet.

But the king spared Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the LORD’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 2Sam21:7
Our sin can trigger generational curses and suffering on innocent people. We may be suffering from the sins of our fathers, mothers or relatives. For this reason we need to watch how we live as to live a positive legacy that would trigger the blessing of God on us and on our children and children’s children. let us sow good seeds that would produce a harvest of goodness and mercy following us all the days of our lives.
Where we find ourselves going through unusual setbacks despite our best efforts, we need to look back in our family history t o see if there have been curses released by our ancestors that are afcting us today. As we approach this sincerely in prayer and fasting the spirit of the Lord wil reveal it tous and show us what to do to break the curses that bind, limit, steal from us, destroy our vineyard like the Midianites were devouring the children of Israel. ( Judges6:5-7) we should also realise that Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law, that the blessings of Abraham might rest on the Gentiles.
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree” ), (Gal3:13)
No curse causeless will stand.
Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, So a curse without cause shall not alight. Prov.26:2
We can plead the blood of Jesus over our lives having confessed our sins and the sins of our fathers and breaking the curse that wants to hold us to ransom. There is power in the blood of Jesus. They over came him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony that they loved not their lives unto death. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Rev.12:11
17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Rom5:16
Jesus is our only hope and He is more than enough- regardless of the infringement from previous generations. As we call on Him in repentance, He will hear us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
