Amnesty International is now demanding that Mexico force its doctors to do abortions and pay for them out of tax funds.

LifeSiteNews.com reports Amnesty International (AI) is denouncing Mexico's government for refusing to force physicians to give emergency contraception or perform abortions on rape victims. Population Research Institute president Steven Mosher is disappointed but not surprised by the move.

"Amnesty International...abandoned any pretense of supporting human rights when it decided to jump on the abortion bandwagon last year," he notes. "And the organization is now promoting abortion everywhere and with no exceptions, with no conscience provisions."

According to LifeSiteNews, Mexico's Secretary of Health Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos altered the original text in Mexico's Official Norm 046 to protect doctors' rights to refuse abortions in the final version, whereas the original document required health professionals to perform the abortions. AI then issued a petition, signed by 5,000 people worldwide, to obligate the Mexican government to perform abortions for rape victims. However, the government disagrees.

Mosher points out that, historically, Mexico is a Christian nation. He says over half of the Mexican states have defined life as beginning at conception and have made abortion illegal. "I think what Amnesty International is doing is an outrage and a violation of the sensibilities and the Christian heritage of the Mexican people," he concludes.
