He came for the Scum- You and I

He came for the scum
Those who are weak,
those who are sick
Rejected of society
hopeless, useless;
Those who know their poverty.
Those who know they’re in darkness
Wallow in emptiness, bound in blindness.
He came for the dead-
Dead in trespass;
Dead in sin;
Blind like a bat
Poor in spirit
Naked, needing His visit
He came for those famished;
Spiritually malnourished.
I was one of them;
Yes, one of the scum
But He lifted me
Made me to see
He washed me clean
From junk I was weaned
He paid the price for me
Opened the door for me
I went in, found pasture
Bounties from the scriptures
Delicacies from His presence
Boon from His excellence
I was sick, hopelessly sick
Licked dry, weak, sin-sick
But he came and made me whole
Because He is now in control.
The hopeless was given hope
By the God of Hope
He opened my eyes
Gave me new life
Silenced the sighs
Lifted me high
Gave me abundant life
God-kind of life
Ever-lasting life.

Are you regarded as scum of the earth?
Are you weak, do you leak,
Are you licked. or sin-sick?
Are you rejected, dejected,
depressed or oppressed?
Are you hopeless, aimless or useless?

Are you dead, decaying, damned;
Doomed, wounded, in a swoon?
Are you dead in trespass;
Dead in sin-sickness?
If so, delay no further

Jesus said, ‘I have come not for
Those who are whole
But for those in sin’s hole
Those under Satan’s stranglehold
I have come to those who are weak and sick
I have come to those who realise their spiritual bankruptcy,
deficiency, decay, damnation, deadness
Emptiness, waywardness and blindness.' (paraphrase)

And so are you one of those in need?
Then come to this Man- the Friend indeed.
He came for us, He came for you
He came for Gentile and Jew
He came to clean you
He came to pay the price for you
So you will not in hell fire stew
He came to make you whole
He came to save your soul
If only you will give Him control.

He came to open your eyes
To see heavenly beauties
Enjoy divine dainties
Sip holy wine from the Vine
As you abide in the Vine

So reach out today
Reach out for the way
Reach out for the life-line
That He offers you today
Reach my friend, do not delay
Reach out for the scepter like Esther
Reach out for the scepter of deliverance
Reach out and you will sing and dance.

Confess your sin
And you’ll be forgiven
And be restored.
Your ice will be thawed
You will receive peace with God
Oh, what a glorious reward!

Come, be reconciled to the Father
Delay no further.
Reach out to Him
He came for the scum-
You and I.
Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew)
13 Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him.
15 Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.) 16 But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees[b] saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?[c]”
17 When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
Mark2:13-17
