John 8:31-41

King James Version (KJV)

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

True Disciples

31 Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you say, ‘You will be made free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

Jesus and Abraham

39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do what Abraham did, 40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this is not what Abraham did. 41 You do what your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.”

These are my thoughts, share yours.

31 We should God’s will for us and follow His word. His will, will not ever go against His word.

32 The truth is Jesus and the scriptures show us His truths.

33 Israelites were slaves in Egypt under Pharaoh. They were decedents of Abraham by blood not by their faith or by their spirit. Even though they are ignorant they ask the meaning of what He said. If they knew Jesus they would know the truth and know what He meant.

34 We are slaves to sin until Christ sets us free and we become His servants. Without Christ being our Master, all we can do is sin because without the truth we are only able to stay in a lie. The flesh only knows sin; this is why we are born again in the Spirit.

35 When we are in the Spirit, we are made children off the Father along side Christ.

36 We are made free because, He took our punishment for us by His death on the cross.

37 People, who reject the truth, hate the truth. They were physical descendents of Abraham but they did not follow the truth like Abraham did.

38 The Jewish people often hated hearing the truth and often killed them. Jesus would suffer a greater fate than them though but similar.

39 They were concerned about them being children of Abraham but, were not concerned about their relationship with the Father.

40 They wanted to kill Jesus something they never admitted until they were planning to kill Him.

41 Jesus was saying they were children of the flesh and of their sins not of the truth and not of righteousness but, they could not understand the truth because they were so, filled with hate.
