John 12:4-6
KJV 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

John 12:4-6New International Version (NIV)

4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

4 Judas was chosen by Christ, who knew Judas would betray Him, Jesus had to be betrayed and it had to be someone who would stay with Him until they betrayed Him, Judas was that man.

5 Judas was concerned about money not about the poor, about things of this world not the world Christ had come to set up. Judas may have been looking for Christ to set up His kingdom but wanted it to be an earthly kingdom not a spiritually kingdom that would later become earthly. Judas was one concerned with the now and not so much about the future. No where in scripture does Jesus or His disciples give money to the poor but they do heal them and bring them to righteousness, by saying this I am not saying giving money to the poor is bad but Christ did things more personally at this time one of the biggest needs of the poor was food which Jesus did provide with the money they had.

6 A thief put in charge of the money back, this shows that Judas was separated from the rest, He was following Jesus for the wrong reason and his love of money would play an important role in betraying Christ.
