King David

King David is perhaps my favorite character in the Bible. He was known as a "man after God's own heart" (1 Samuel 13:13-15) and yet he sinned miserably. Most people are aware of his sin with Bathsheba, and his futile attempts to cover up his sin. The attempt to cover his sin resulted in another sin: murder.

How can a adulterer and a murderer be called a "man after God's own heart?" I believe it is because when he failed, he repented and then turned back to God (see Psalm 51). I love the fact that this man who failed grievously could still be called a man after God's own heart. This is good news for all of us who want to honor and please the Lord and yet fail in our Christian walk. And all of us fail!

There is a lot to learn from the life of King David for Christians of all time, including now. Because of that, I've decided to write a series of articles on the life of David. Among other things, I'll look at King David as a shepherd, King David as a singer, King David as a soldier, King David as a sinner, King David as a statesman, and King David as a sage.

Why should I bother with such an extensive study on the life of King David? For numerous reasons! First of all, like David, I fail many times in my Christian walk, and yet I want to be known as a woman after God's own heart. I want to learn what earned him that title, in spite of his miserable failures. I believe that my study of David will enrich my spiritual life, and that God will use it to enrich the spiritual lives of all who read it as well.

There are several other reasons to study the life of King David. He started off in a humble manner. He seemed like a nobody, even to his family. But in spite of his humble beginnings, God saw fit to include massive amounts of information in the Bible on the life of King David. For instance, there are over 1,000 verses in the Bible about King David. More is written in the Bible about King David than many other famous Bible characters including Abraham and Moses. Believe it or not, there is more in the Bible about King David than there is about Jesus! Since the Bible devotes such a massive amount of information about King David, I believe it would serve us well to delve into his life and discover all we can about him, and how what we learn about King David can apply to our lives today.

King David was also significant because he is part of the lineage of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Christ is, in fact, referred to as the "Son of David." King David was also one of the few Bible characters who made it into the "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews 11. For all of these reasons and more, I believe King David is a man worth studying.
