Old Dirt Road
Old Dirt Road
I was walking along and old dirt road and came across the hill
And the view took my breath away; I see it in my mind’s eye still
It wasn’t that large of a place; twenty acres surrounded by woods
And there about middle ways; an ole tin roofed farmhouse stood
And at the ole farmhouse stood some big oak trees
With leaves shimmering and dancing; blown by a gentle breeze
And in the sky a red tailed hawk; headed for the mountain pass
Barefoot on that old dirt road; I knew that I was home at last
My heart began to leap with joy; tears my eyes were filled
My pace began to quicken; now I’m running down that hill
I called out to the ole farmhouse; Mama, I’ve made it home
And then I realized the angels have come; and Mama is gone
I was walking along and old dirt road and came across the hill
And the view took my breath away; I see it in my mind’s eye still
Mama is at the river Jordan; drawing pictures in the sand
And Jesus is there waiting beside her; offering me his hand
And the waters shimmer like silver; blown by a gentle breeze
Reminding me of the ole farmhouse and those old oak trees
My pace begins to quicken; now I’m running down that hill
And my heart leaps with joy; tears my eyes were filled
And in the sky an angelic choir; like thunder from a mountain pass
Bare foot on that old dirt road; I know I’m home at last

Simply exquisite parallel picture of earth and heaven, full of beautiful imagery, simile and personification.

Re: Old Dirt Road
I think this is one of the most beautiful poems written about
Homecoming to the Lord. You have shown in this poem the
hope that we all eagerly wait for, to be with Him. Blessings.
