Repentance
Let your broken heart show your sorrow; tearing your clothes in not enough. "Come back to the LORD your God. He is kind and full of mercy; He is patient and keeps His promise; He is awlays ready to forgive and not to punish" (Joel 2:13)
The word repentance comes from the word Repent. Repent means to think the other way. While repenting from our sins, we must make sure that we also leave the bad habit of I will sin now and ask God for forgiveness. This is a habit which in general most of have in our personality. Although God is patient and merciful, yet willful sin is sinning against God.
There are three ways of Repentance described in the Bible:
The first type of repentance is that one must confess sins to God so that He may forgive us from our sins. There are various verses in the Bible, the verse which I always put before me is: "But even now," says the LORD, "repent sincerely and return to me with fasting, weeping and mourning" (Joel 2:12)
It is the same way when David seeked forgiveness from God when he sinned. God wants us to leave our sinful living and turn to Him with all our heart and soul.
The second type of repentance is So then, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you will be healed. The prayer of a good person had a powerful effect. (James 5:16)
In this type of repentance, we asked by God that if we sin against any person, we should confess that we are wrong and should not let negative actions to be taken. God wants us to live in harmony and in peace with everyone. When we follow God and His commands, He blesses our prayers with power and authority, that is why, it is written that a prayer of a good person has a powerful effect.
The third type of repentance is mostly seeked by Roman Catholics. It is not against Biblical principles to confess the sins in front of a Priest. However, when Jesus came on earth, died and resurrected, He bridged the gap between Father and His creation. Therefore, it is better to confess and repent our sins before God.
The third type is based on the Jewish principle of repentance and we see an example of it in the New Testament.
In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea. And saying Repent for the kingdom of Heaven is near. (Mathew 3:1-2)
The point here is that we must repent. But to repent we need to know what wrong we have done. For that reason we must read Bible to learn about sin and good deeds. Only then we will be able to recognize sin and devil's schemes.
God bless
