(IsraelNN.com) This week, one of the most unique archaeological projects in Israel came to a close – the preservation and development of the ancient Canaanite gateway in the Ashkelon National Park. The gateway, which contains an arch amongst the oldest in the world, was built more than 4,000 years ago as part of the fortifications of ancient Ashkelon. The arch, housing the northern gateway to the ancient city, served as an entrypoint for people, ox-drawn wagons and load-bearing donkeys, as well as sailors and merchants in ancient times.
In a festive ceremony, the protective coverings used during the preservation efforts will be removed this afternoon by project members in the Ashkelon National Park.
