Son of Sorrow Seed of Sweetness
Remember that dark clouds distil bright drops
Wild wood blooms with beauteous flowerets.
From the deep ocean caves of distress
Comes the priceless coral of experience.
Remember, stormy seas feed multitudes with fishes.
Samson’s carcass yielded yummy honey.
Stormy sea sweep away pestilence.
Biting frost loosen the soil.
Black earth grows gay flowers.
Every mine of evils delivers a vein of good.
So when darkness of death appears,
Let faith point to the resurrection.
Let your dying Benoni uplift
Your promised Benjamin
May you out of your rough oyster shell
of difficulty extract a rare pearl of honour.
When your sun of delight goes down,
May you reach for your telescope of hope
And peer into the starry promises of heaven.
When your pitcher is broken,
Rejoice, for your light that will shine brighter.
From your worst of calamities
shall be birth incredible promises.
When the flood of your prosperity ebbs
May you find glorious treasures hid in the sand.
Pearls gleaned from Spurgeon’s devotional
"She called his name Benoni (son of sorrow), but his father called him Benjamin (son of my right hand)."-Genesis 35:18
"
We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God."-Acts 14:22
Morning
It is ordained of old that the cross of trouble should be engraved on every vessel of mercy, as the royal mark whereby the King's vessels of honour are distinguished. But although tribulation is thus the path of God's children, they have the comfort of knowing that their Master has traversed it before them; they have His presence and sympathy to cheer them, His grace to support them, and His example to teach them how to endure; and when they reach "the kingdom," it will more than make amends for the "much tribulation" through which they passed to enter it.
C.H. Spurgeon
