The main governing body of the World Council of Churches has called on the government of Pakistan to repeal the section of the country's penal code which carries a mandatory death penalty for anyone found guilty of blasphemy, reports Ecumenical News International.

At a 26 August to 2 September meeting in Geneva, the WCC's governing body, its central committee issued a public statement calling on Pakistan to "guarantee the rights of all religious minorities in the country".

The church council said it considered the law has become "a major source of victimisation and persecution" of religious minorities who are living "in a state of fear and terror".
