"For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed." (Malachi 3:6)

"So the Lord changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people." (Exodus 32:14)

Malachi says that God does not change whereas in Exodus we read that God changed His mind - so is it a contradiction? The answer is no, God can change his mind but His nature cannot change. The incident we read in Exodus is according to the nature of God as we read in Jeremiah:

This is what the LORD says,"...that I am the LORD who exercises Kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight." declared the LORD (Jeremiah 9:23-24)

In Exodus when God changed His mind, He acted according to His nature and showed kindness. Therefore, there is no contradiction in God's nature as described in Malachi and Exodus. God cannot change because He is not like shifting shadows.

God bless you

You have beautifully explained this passage by quoting Jeremiah. These two verses of Malachi and Exodus are pet verses for Atheists to deny God and Bible. If you visit any Atheists website, you will surely find these two verses under the heading, "Why I do not believe in God" or "Is Bible reliable". Thank you for explaining it.

God bless

I agree that Book of Jeremiah makes it very clear that God in His nature can never change. On surface the verses do contradict each other but we need to understand the context and the meaning, how they were spoken.
